Many times in the past, I pondered my upcoming gym routines and dreaded each exercise. On those days, I came up with some great excuses to just go through the motions and do a half-hearted workout, or at times, to skip gym entirely. I used to constantly psyche myself out, and it hindered my fitness goals.
It’s the human condition to seek out the path of least resistance, and exercising is the opposite of that, because in order to grow, you must willingly put yourself through pain. Thus, it’s perfectly normal to be afraid of the gym.
However, I overcame this fear by training myself to not think, and just do. As the adage goes, “there is nothing to worry about, until there’s something to worry about”. Before heading to your workout, tell yourself it is something you must do, like brushing your teeth. Accept the fact that you may not like it, but you must get it done regardless. Before you know it, gym will become a habit; a habit stronger than excuses and instinctual fear.
As for any other fears you may have, take them with you into the gym, and beat the ever-loving hell out of them.
“Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear – not absence of fear”
- Mark Twain
